What exactly is the CrossFit Open?

The CrossFit Open is an annual online competition dating back to 2011 when athletes all around the world competed for a chance to go to the CrossFit Games where someone would be titled the Fittest Man or Woman on Earth. If you’ve ever watched the CrossFit Games and wondered how they got there, the Open is how they started the journey. The top 20 athletes in each division moved on to Regionals where the top 5 men and women from each region moved on to the Games.

Anyone over 14 years old, including advanced, scaled, foundations, and adaptive athletes, can compete in the CrossFit Open. This year, the open will be three weeks long. Each week on Thursday night, one workout will be livestreamed, usually with two CrossFit Games athletes and two scaled athletes going head to head to kick off the excitement. The workouts are labeled after the year and order in which they appeared (ex: 22.1, 22.2, 22.3).

The workout is completed at your local box where you have a judge count your reps and sign off on your score. You would have until 8pm Monday the following week to submit your score for approval where you can see your rank worldwide via an online leaderboard and track your scores from previous years.

Whether you’re an athlete looking to go to the Games or someone brand new to CrossFit, the Open is a fantastic way to establish a baseline, test your ultimate level of fitness, and develop a sense of purpose in your CrossFit training.

What is the CrossFit Mountain Island Intramural Open?

The CFMI intramural open is specifically for competing within your box. It’s a fitness party every Friday night where you get to cheer on your teammates, see where you rank among your peers (within your division that is), celebrate each others’ successes and experience the sport of CrossFit.

By registering through CFMI instead of CF HQ, your $20 will go towards new equipment for the gym (something you can personally benefit from).

Your $20 will also include 4 weeks of Open Prep Clinics!
*Saturday, January 29th @ 8am (TOES TO BAR & PULL-UPS) – Justin
*Saturday, February 5th @ 8am (BARBELL)- Megan
*Saturday, February 12th @ 8am (HANDSTANDS) – Lindsay
*Saturday, February 19th @ 8am (WORKOUT STRATEGY & MINDSET)- Coty
Clinics are $15 each for athletes not registered in the Open.

Regardless of entry, the Open workouts will be the Workout of the Day on Friday February 25th, March 4th, March 11th, and a BONUS Surprise FUN WOD March 18th.

HOW TO SIGN-UP

THE DRAFT

Captains will “draft” equal teams via a Hopper, split between 4 teams– Captains Coty, Megan, Justin, and Lindsay
The first draft will be January 28th at 7pm! Watch your coaches go head-to-head as they compete to be the first to draw names for their teams.
We will have mini-drafts every Friday leading up to the Open so make sure to register ASAP to get on a team.

SCORING FOR YOUR TEAM!

Here is our scoring structure on how you can accumulate “points” for your team each week:
1 point for every athlete who completes a given Open workout
2 points for every athlete who competes during Friday Night Lights
1 point for every athlete who finishes among the top 3 women or top 3 men in the gym per workout per division.
5 points (just once) if a team wins the “Spirit of the Open” award on any given week. This can be done with team outfit coordination, team cheers, team attendance, and general enthusiasm and participation. So basically the most noise, pride, and PRESENCE each week will receive 5 bonus points!

HOW TO WIN

The team with the most accumulated points through the 3 weeks, will be awarded:
Banner with team names hung up in gym
Vote on equipment for the gym (Ski Erg, Echo Bike, Rower, Sandbags, Strongman Yoke, etc.)

Q&A

When/where can I do the Open workouts for the CFMI Intramural Open?
In order for your score to count for the Intramural Open you MUST complete the workouts at CFMI or submit a video to the head coach of your workout at home. You may complete the Open workout(s) during any Friday class or during Friday Night Lights or Saturday (with coach’s approval). Scores and workout attempts for the Intramural Open MUST be completed and in CHIP by Saturday night. (Exceptions to be made on individual basis and only with coach approval).

How can I make sure my participation and score counts?
In order for your score to count, you MUST enter your score into CHIP after doing your workout. Entering your score into games.crossfit.com (if you choose to sign up there) alone, will not count towards the CFMI IO. If your score is not in CHIP, your score/participation points will not be counted. Coaches can help on how to enter scores into CHIP, its easy!

I’m dropping in from out of town, can I do the Open workout at CFMI?
Absolutely! Drop-ins are $25. You can participate in the Open on Fridays only using the following link:

Keep in mind, heats will not be released until Thursday night after the Open Announcement. Please allow 30-45mins for heats to open up in Triib. You may sign-up for a heat as soon as they go live.
