Not Your Typical Group Fitness Gym
I've been coaching for 15 years and running CrossFit Mountain Island for almost 10. In that time, one pattern has stood out above everything else: the members who succeed here are almost always the ones who went through a few private training sessions before they ever stepped into a class.
There are exceptions — if you're coming from another CrossFit gym and already know your way around a barbell, you can walk straight into class and have a great time. But that's not most people. Most people who join my gym don't have much experience, if any, with strength training or structured workouts.
Here's what happens when we skip those private onboarding sessions.
Picture someone in their 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s. They've built a career. They've raised a family. They're good at their life. Now put that same capable person into a class with 8 to 12 of their peers and ask them to learn movements they've never done before.
They're going to feel incompetent.
Uncomfortable.
Insecure.
Self-conscious.
And that kicks off a negative feedback loop: they show up, they don't know what's going on, every movement feels unfamiliar, they're not sure if their technique is right, and everyone around them looks like they've got it figured out. They don't feel like they fit in. And that feeling — more than any workout — is what keeps people from coming back.
Our solution? Four private sessions, built into their first few months.
That's why both our Fitness package and our Lifestyle package include four private training sessions over your first three months. The first sessions teach the fundamentals — safely, correctly, in a controlled environment — so you feel prepared before you ever walk into a group class.
Then, after about a month of classes, you come back for your third or fourth session with real questions. By then you know which movements are giving you trouble and what still needs cleaning up. We work one-on-one again to refine it, so that as you settle into group classes for good, you're building on a foundation that actually holds.
This is why our average member stays with us for over two years. And here's the thing — if you do CrossFit consistently for two years, three to five days a week, you come out the other side a genuinely different person.
We're not chasing people who want to come in for a month or two and quit. We're looking for people who are serious about figuring out their health and fitness for the long haul, and we build the foundation to make sure that runway is long.
Most of our members invest about $50 a week — roughly $200 a month — into that outcome. That's coaching in every single session, not a online program and a hope. That's programming built around your goals, not a one-size-fits-all plan. That's people who know your name and notice when you're not there for a week.
You're not paying for machines and mirrors. You're paying for the version of yourself that's still showing up in two years.
If you want a workout program you don't have to guess your way through. If you want real coaching — one-on-one, not just thrown into a crowd. If you want a group of people your age, at your stage of life, working toward the same goals, who you can actually build community with. And if you're serious about changing the trajectory of your health and fitness — check us out.
